Jolly Heartmate Canola Oil

Donita Rose is the face behind healthy oil label

Jolly Heartmate Canola Oil (JHCO) introduced its first brand ambassador since the brand's inception in 1997; then known simply as Jolly Canola Oil. Demonstrating her passion for cooking and proclivity for healthy recipes for herself and her family, Donita Rose Cavett-Villarama is the label's perfect heartmate; embodying the vision and qualities that the brand stands for.
"Donita Rose is a chef who knows her cooking oil and the benefits it gives her. As a celebrity, chef and doting mother, she has aligned her career with our brand. We are beyond happy to welcome her into the JHCO family. The label is a consistent No. 1 canola oil brand in the Philippines since 2011. With Donita Rose as our brand ambassador, I believe she will strengthen the label much further," declared Fly Ace Corp. (FAC) president Jun Cochanco.
"The partnership of the brand with the Phil. Heart Center since 2013 only shows the heartfelt benefits of JHCO. We conduct awareness campaign on the heart healthy advantages of using a healthy cooking oil for daily cooking. We are doing this initiative to further widen our reach. With the lowest bad oil (saturated fat) content, JHCO is best for deep frying, sauteeing, stir frying and even for salad dressing," concurred VP for marketing Abe Cipriano.
The noonday event at Shangri-La Mall's Epicurious deli-resto emphasized the brand's heart-healthy benefits. Canola oil is one of the healthiest cooking oils because it has the lowest saturated fat (bad fat) content as against other cooking oil types; boasting of high levels of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (good fat) from its seeds. JHCO has oleic acid, Omega 3 and 6, and is fortified with Vit. A.
"While olive oil may have a higher monounsaturated fat, canola oil has a lower saturated fat than olive oil. Canola has inherent Omega 6 mono- and polyunsaturated oils from its very seeds. Our change in brand name took three tedious years of laboratory tests to examine and show the veracity of the contents in our label.
"I admire the way Donita connects to her audience with her lively personality. I was surprised to witness her passion for cooking during our segments with her in the GMA-show Basta Everyday Happy in 2014. I believe she can inspire others to live heart-healthy lifestyles by using a healthy oil in all the dishes they cook at home," shared senior brand manager Zenith Prudentino.
Chef Donita gamely did a cooking demo; showing media attendees easy recipes to get our heart-healthy lifestyles greenlighted. She prepared a light salad, fish dish and a savory chicken plate. "This is the pinnacle of my culinary journey, I'm overwhelmed. It's a match made in heaven. This undertaking started in the Basta Everyday Happy show where JHCO had a segment. I approached them for my blog after the collaboration ended and voila! I became their endorser," gushed Mrs. Eric Villarama, who finished her culinary degree from a scholarship grant at the Academy for International Culinary Arts in 2012.
The Veggie Crunchy Salad was a lightly tossed mix of red cabbage, turnips, carrots, cilantro, ginger, garlic, and seeded cucumber (so salad does not become watery) with a dressing made from lime juice, peanut sauce, canola oil and honey. "JHCO's neutral taste is perfect for salad dressing. It is so versatile that you can use it even for desserts. I like everything fresh so I create dishes from scratch," intoned the doting mom of Joshua Paul.
Her main course, the Lemon Cilantro Salmon with Mango-Avocado Salsa, was a dish of pan-seared salmon smothered with a salsa mix of diced avocado, mangos, tomato, garlic, onions and cilantro blended with canola oil, lime juice, salt and pepper.
The fowl entree, Honey & Lime Sriracha Chicken, on the other hand, was a delicious plate of roasted chicken morsels that were marinated with soy sauce, honey, garlic, ginger and sriracha sauce for some spice and zing, sitting atop a basket of fried noodle. "The longer the marinade, the better. Also, in preparing game or fowl dishes, wash your hands carefully and cook them well because chicken has salmonella. In culinary school, if your chicken is uncooked, you fail from the course! When cooking chicken, a high temperature and good oil are important because once you drop it on the pan, the heat seals in the juices so the meat remains moist and juicy after it has been cooked.
"I'm serious and passionate about food. The reason why I went to cooking school was to understand the principles of cooking and thus gave me leeway to substitute ingredients with much healthier options. The culinary industry is a man's world because you carry a lot of heavy stuff into the kitchen," apprized the That's Entertainment alumna.
JHCO has a pale golden color, light texture and neutral taste which makes it usable for any dish. It also has one of the highest smoking points which make it very ideal for frying. "Be careful, though, not to cook anything on smoking point becomes that's toxic to the body nor should you fry food in too low a temperature because it will absorb most of the oil. Asian cuisine is all the rage and it's my favorite.
"I made all the kitchen mistakes in the US so I don't do them here. It is important to keep a clean station and clean as you go so nobody gets sick from food handling. I have a habit of cooking for people and watch them eat," advised Donita, who counts Zappos and Crowne Plaza as stints in her culinary voyage.
Packed in Singapore, JHCO comes in bottles with 500ml, 1-liter, 2-liter, and 5-liter contents. "The Vit. A and Omega 3 & 6 combo in JHCO washes out the bad fat from the food you cooked. While most women gravitate towards baking, I went to butchery and therein lied the challenge because you need to understand the carcass and learn to kill live game or shellfish.
"As the eldest of four siblings, I've always considered myself motherly. My dad was the cook in the family and I was his assistant. I may embark on writing a recipe book and/or open a restaurant in the near future," the former MTV veejay said in closing.
Donita Rose is currently playing Celeste, the anti-heroine in the GMA-soap 'Let Me Love Again' that airs weeknights at 8:30 over the Rainbow network.
