Hooq turns two

Celebrating with content partners at hip joint
By Key Kaluh

Hooq recently celebrated its second year anniversary with new partners, a new TVOD service, and announcements to a string of new Asian and Hollywood shows at the swanky 20/20 club in Makati City. In a short span of time, the company has become the No. 1 VOD service in Southeast Asia.

Since its nascence, it has delivered the best of both Eastern and Western entertainment to homes across the region. Hooq has subscribers in the millions, all of whom can enjoy over 30,000 hours of quality viewing. This wide library of content will be increased with new partnerships from Paramount Pictures, BBC Worldwide, and Endamol Shine. Furthermore, Hooq announced a new feature that delivers movies fresh from the cinemas to subscribers' homes - the Transactional Video-On-Demand (TVOD) service. This allows blockbuster movies to hit the service within three months of their theatrical release. To top it all, consumers subscribing to the current Subscription VOD (SVOD) service will be able to enjoy one movie from the TVOD library each month as part of their SVOD subscription at no additional cost.

"We call this the Golden Ticket, wherein subscribers get one premium movie for free per month. These are current titles that will be shown on Hooq 90 days after their US theatrical release, and without changing the pricing catalogue.

"We're growing and getting better. Hooq allows Pinoys to access Hollywood and local content anytime, anywhere. Filipinos appreciate Hollywood blockbusters but love Pinoy content too! And as our birthday present to them, we will give them amazing Hollywood movies, hot and fresh each week - from Pixar, Marvel, Sony, and Warner Bros.," shared chief executive officer Peter Bithos.

Built in Asia for Asia, Hooq's formula has been to be a subscription video-on-demand service that continuously delivers and innovates the best quality entertainment. Whether it is its world's first download capability for Hollywood, its weekly pricing, or its ad-free freemium model, Hooq has continued to evolve its business model for Asia. This success comes from its strategy of combining the best Asian and Hollywood content with a solid distribution partner network of top telcos and broadband providers in the region that includes AIS, Airtel, Telkom, Telkomsel, and Globe Telecom to name a few.

"Since March 2015, even before we began commercially, Globe has been our partner. Thus, all its postpaid plans and P1299 broadband subscriptions will enjoy six months of free Hooq. Also, prepaid subscribers of the GoSurf50 data package will enjoy three months free Hooq.

"Our partnership with Regal Entertainment and Viva Entertainment allows us new titles like Die Beautiful and Bakit Lahat ng Guwapo may Boyfriend. GMA will roll out the ALDub series Destined to be Yours, while ABS-CBN will feature flicks of LizQuen and KathNiel tandems," revealed country manager Jane Cruz-Walker.

Hooq's new TVOD service not only gives access to movies from the cinemas to households but also allows subscribers to watch any 1 TVOD movie per month as part of their current subscription, while additional movies can be rented for just P125 each. There will be new movies uploaded each month from studios such as Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., Disney, Dreamworks, and Pixar with titles like Arrival, Underworld: Blood Wars, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to name a few. With this new feature, consumers can now enjoy the largest library of Hollywood and Asian hits and TV series the same day as the United States airing, as well as the latest movies fresh off their theatrical releases.

In the Philippines, Hooq has inked exclusive deals with Regal Entertainment and Viva Communications for digital rights to their new movies within three months of cinema run. Recent hits like Camp Sawi and I Love You to Death have already debuted on Hooq and are consistently in the Top 10 list of most watched content by subscribers. Mano Po 7, The Escort, and My Rebound Girl will be on Hooq within the next quarter, with newly released movies to follow throughout the year.

In addition, Hooq is bolstering its lineup with more Hollywood studio partnerships consisting of other producers like Lionsgate, Miramax, Starz, and over a hundred Asian studios. New hit series are now available from Endamol Shine and BBC including Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Mistresses, and Wolf Hall. The full catalogue of DC shows are now also on Hooq, including Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, and Gotham. Meanwhile, Supergirl, Lucifer, and Powerless are available for streaming within 24 hours of US airing.

"We have increased our subscription base since we started. Hooq offers new and updated content each month as well as original content like On The Job. Direk Eric Matti has made a second OTJ movie with a different cast from the original film that will focus on the media industry this time. It will be a two-hour film that will hit the cinemas in August, paving the way for the screening of the series by September. It is another edgy project that will surely tickle the Pinoys' imagination.

"We are leading the VOD subscriber-based market. We listen to the Pinoy market's feedback and what they want. Hooq is careful in understanding them. Our prime targets now are young families that's why we are increasing our kids offering so that we will fully cater to the His/Her/Kids/We time. With the Kids Mode now in place, kids won't be able to open adult stuff as easily," intoned chief content officer Jeffrey Remigio.
