Folk dance group honored

As the country's foremost folk dance company, whose pioneering efforts have added a new dimension to the Filipino dance tradition, the Bayanihan Dance Company has won the world over with its evolving repertoires through major tours across six continents, sixty-six countries, and over 700 cities throughout the globe.

By promoting international goodwill, it has remained the repository in preserving near-extant Philippine performing art forms.

As the Philippines' national folk dance company, the Bayanihan Dance Company's many major world tours have built a rich reserve of international goodwill to the Philippines.

As CCP's resident dance company, its vision has awakened a new pride in the Filipino's cultural heritage by preserving indigenous Philippine art forms in music, dance, costumes, and folklore.

And in continuously innovating repertoires suited to the demands of contemporary theater, as well as in the fast merging technologies of movement and dance in the 21st century, Dr. Helena Z. Benitez's folk dance group has come a long way since its inception in 1957.

Milestones:

1956 - The Bayanihan Folk Dance Group of the Philippine Women's University is formed by visionary Dr. Helena Z. Benitez's.

1957 - The Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company is created as the performing arm of the Bayanihan Folk Arts Center.

Late '60s to the 70s/80s/90s and unto the new millennium - The Bayanihan embarks on its many major world tours to Asia, Australia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas, as well as short tours in other foreign locales.

2002 - The Bayanihan Dance Company joined, and won its first of many grand prizes, in the World Dance Competitions.

2015 - The company won the World Dance Competition in Sagra del Mandorlo il Fire in Agrigento, Sicily. This latest feat is their twelfth time in winning the grand championship.

2017 - QC honors the Bayanihan Dance Company as one of the country’s most decorated ensembles with the MLQ Gawad Parangal citation.
