Mrs. Universe Philippines

Pageant director champions initiative on violence against women
By Key Kaluh

Reigning Mrs. Universe-Philippines Ma. Charo Calalo always wanted to be a beauty queen. After a brief stint with the Bb. Pilipinas pageant in 1998, married life took over and it was only recently that her love for pageantry resurfaced; and this time her dream was fulfilled.

Competing with 93 international hopefuls from all over the world in Guangzhou, China last December, Charo was one of the pageant’s 18 semi-finalists after a fourteen-day pre-pageant selection process. If pageant history serves us right, Calalo is the first Filipina delegate to have achieved such a feat in that prestigious competition. She was also voted Mrs. Universe Popularity during the said search.

A Scorpio born in the Year of the Dragon, Charo dabbled in show-business prior to her pageant involvement. She was with the Monday Group of GMA’s That’s Entertainment in 1994, under the screen name Charo Laude, up until the afternoon show closed in May 1996.

When she represented the country in the international finals, Charo’s advocacy has been against domestic violence on women and children – an initiative she shares with the Mrs. Universe organization. “I’ve been a victim of violence for 22 years: physical, mental, and emotional. That’s why I still fight for violence against women even after being separated from my abusive husband for seven years. That’s all in the past now,” she revealed.

After her streak in the international finals, the head organization named her the national director for the local pageant.

There won’t be a selection this year due to the global pandemic but she’ll be sending four delegates to represent the country in an online poll. The four aspirants, representing QC, San Juan, Manila, and Laguna will be part of the roster of 100 global aspirants come December.

Next year, when the national search is green-lighted, forty official candidates will be handpicked from the flock of national aspirants. Interested delegates must be legally married, of good reputation, a role model, an empowered woman, and one who has an advocacy against violence on women.

Charo is the operator/proprietress of Charo Milk Tea and Simon Supreme Restobar that are both located at 120 Tomas Morato St., smack right in Timog area’s party zone. She is the proud mother of Yna Angela (19), Yssa (17), and Kevin Gabby (15).
