The 'Tokhang' Chronicles

Is the Philippines ready for a jury system?

By Earl D.C. Bracamonte

After the success of “Pilato” last year, the Corner Studio came up with another politically-charged play titled “People vs. De La Cruz.”

Written as reaction to the ‘tokhang’ policy, this one-act satirical play takes a sharp look at our online behaviour through the premise that it is the Philippines’ very first jury case.

The 60-minute play follows a day in the deliberarion sessions. The jury members dissect a murder case to determine the guilt of the accused. It showed how the deliberations can sway the outcome of the case – where all of them need to reach a unanimous vote.

“Don’t argue based on your emotions, religious beliefs, or personal influence. Justice sbould be meted out or given simply so as to be easily understood by an ordinary citizen.

“Philippine politics is partisan and emotionally-driven. I wish that, one day, we evolve into a society where the jury system can work. It may be a long way to that end; as we are ‘politically immature’ as a people,” observed playright and director Eldrin Veloso.

Talkbacks after each performance enhances the theater experience, as well as share the many perspectives of the show’s different viewers.

Enjoying a strong opening day, and sold-out shows, there will be an extended run of three more shows for the coming weekend: Jan 30 (Friday), 8 pm, as well as Jan 31 (Saturday),3 pm and 8 pm.

The Corner Studio is conveniently located at the 4th Floor of the J&T Building along Magsaysay Boulevard in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
