TP restages musical on the ‘Sublime Paralytic’

Tanghalang Pilipino (TP) brings back the hip musical “Mabining Mandirigma” after its pre-pandemic run in 2019. Directed by Chris Millado from material penned by Nick Tiongson, the two-act presentation has been touted as a ‘steampunk musical,’ with music from Joed Balsamo, set by Toym Imao, and costumes by James Reyes and Daniel Gregorio.

First staged in 2015, “Mabining Mandirigma” brings to life the inspiring story of Apolinario Mabini through music, history, and bold visuals; including a highly innovative movement and choreography from Denisa Reyes and Richardson Yadao.

For this edition, Mabini is played by Shaira Opsimar and alternate Anya Evangelista.

Four other thespians have already played the role of Apolinario Mabini. This bold casting choice emphasizes Mabini’s intellect and moral force over physicality; challenging traditional and historical representation.

They are Delphine Buencamino (2015), Leisl Batucan (2016), Monique Wilson, and Hazel Maranan (2019).

On the other hand, two actors have played the role of Emilio Aguinaldo: Armand Ferrer, since 2015, and David Ezra, who came in as an alternate in 2016; playing the role alongside Ferrer with aplomb.

Catch the remaining performances of Mabining Mandirigma at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (CCP Blackbox Theater) this weekend.
